Ok, You need to start reading to learn most of the basic strategies.

I would recommend 'Winning Chess....." Series by Seirawan and "How to Reassess Your Chess" by Silman.

If you go through the entire series then read the Silman book and actually take what they say to heart then put these ideas into practice in your games, you should be able to rise to a 1600+ player.

Notice that I haven't finished the series yet.....
