Wrong.

Both you and Red Night seem to feel that it isn't what was put up that was offensive except for who put it up. Compare RN's comments to yours:

RN: If you put up a picture of a slave in chains and join a group dedicated to the propogation of negative racial stereotypes then a reasonable person would find that offensive.

If you put up the same picture and joined the Lavarr burton fan club, then not so much.

Are you saying there's been no discussion of this in the TSM Club?

Then why return vague assumptions, and call it debate?

Sorry, another question. Bottom line is.....to call someone ignoranrt because they didn't know some vague frame of reference is wrong, they may be technically ignorant of that particular fact, but to call them "Ignorant" is plain wrong.
hmm... are you assuming that by ignorant I meant they were stupid, idiotic, morons etc? I didn't. I meant they were ignorant, eg. they don't know things. newton was ignorant of quantum mechanics, but it doesn't make him an idiot.

kunta kinte is quite well known figure. ahab, pocahontas, sherlock holmes, james t. kirk, james bond, odysseus, etc. that kind of thing. not everybody knows them, but it's not like we were talking about kaiser soze, ziggy stardust, or raoul duke, all well known characters as well but not really on the same level.

kunta kinte is not a vague thing. in any contemporary piece of art (tv/novel/play/etc) you're assumed to know him. the reference won't be explained, even to american audience who usually get everything explained. if you see a movie, and someone says "what are you, kunta kinte?" it won't be explained any further. it's just assumed you know the reference.

if you don't, you're ignorant about it. which is no big deal, and easily fixed. none of us heard about him before we first heard about him, and before that we were all ignorant about him. but now we know. ignorance in the world has just diminished a tiny bit. some of us probably even learned a bit about contemporary australian history as well. it's all good.

And the funniest thing is, she's not even black. Aboriginals aren't even close to Africans in the great big human family tree. It's about as logical as a Japanese man saying he's black.

...

Well, TECHNICALLY, we're all black, because we originated from Africa 60,000 years ago. (Just don't think you can say the N word now that you have this information.)

Aboriginals were the first group to split off from the African originals... 50,000 years ago, so white people are even more black than them.

An honest question.

How many people, who know of Kunta Kinti, would be able to pick him out of a lineup of Black slave pictures?

"Since last night"??

I wasn't talking about "since last night"; I was talking about before you decided to alert someone's avatar primarily because they were in the BWA.
