Case in point:

Arcade Fire's "Tunnels"

Listen carefully to the song, and don't do an end run by reading the lyrics sheet or look it up online.

"And if my parents are crying
then I'll dig a tunnel
from my win-doe-dee-o"

What in tarnation is a 🙄😵 windoedeeo?

It's The End Of The World As We Know It.

REM

I'll give anyone a tenner who can recite the lyrics vocally, word for word.

I expect to hear only proper enunciation on your CD. 😉

Actually end of the world isn't too hard at all, I've just learnt it in about ten minutes, including guitar part. 🙂

In fact the Reel Big Fish version is much faster than REM's

Reminds me when I was around 16 and listened to "Jesus Christ Superstar" for the first time, I could't really figure why King Herod calls Jesus "the King of the juice" (It's "the King of the Jews", of course). And in the priests' song, I heard (and still do, in fact) not "his glamour increases", but "his grammar increases" - which is kinda logical, after all He was a carpenter's son, thus might be not as well educated 🙂

One that still amuses me to this day, in 'Heartbreaker' by Led Zep, the lines:

'One more thing on my mind, if you can clarify, please do'

actually sounds like

'One more thing on my mind, if you can carry my beef stew'

I never made the first team, I just made the first team laugh,
And she never came to the phone - she was always in the bath

"Billy Bragg - sataurday boy" - The story of my early teens.

Two songs I would hate to have to learn the lyrics for:
Bare Naked Ladies - One Week
Duran Duran - New Moon on Monday

I might be wrong here, but as I heard it, the Boss wrote it for Manfred Mann and then later 'covered' his own song as it were.
