Netscape would be a good choice then, since it has ie as an internal option. So if the page doesn't look good, choose to view it using the ie component (only available in win).

The webmasters will know (if they have a descent statistics program) that more of their users are using netscape and may then decide to make the website more standards-compliant (so it will work with all browser).

You, the users, decide which browsers a website should support. Not the website owners. The biggest browser gets the most attention. If the biggest browser is one that support standards, then all browsers who does will be compatible with the website, thus, no problem.

Exactly. And the beauty of it all is that Mozilla, firefox and netscape are essentially the same browser (the are all built on the gecko engine). What that means is that a page looks the same in all three browsers.

There are more browsers built on gecko - safari, if I'm not mistaken, is one of them.

If more people choose to use sc browsers, then it will be easier on everyone in the end, developers, browser manufacturers and end-users. The choice of which browser to choose should not come down to whether pages will look good in it or not. It should be about the interface extras (or lack thereof) that the browser has to offer (such as the search field in opera and firefox - and apparently now also ie7).

I downloaded it after I saw this last night. Tried making some chess moves with it for half an hour and then went back to IE6. This beta is very buggy, for a start it kept bringing up windows error reports when I went to certain pages, Windows Update included! But more irritatingly it kept bringing up the Dial-Up connection box (even though I'm on a broadband connection) ever time it navigated to a new page?! 😕

I'm using Netscape 8.1 right now. Can't say I'm having any problems with it.

I recommended netscape for those who can't stand firing up ie when they come across a site that they really need but that doesn't support standards.

Here's what I do. Whenever I come across such a site, I fire up ie, contact the administrator with complaints about them not supporting my preferred browser, and leave. If everyone did that, pretty soon there would be no need to use ie unless, of course, you really like the browser itself (the features it has to offer, its look and behaviour).

So, unless you really dislike firefox (and company), and netscape won't work for you, you could install firefox and use it as the default browser only opening ie when it's really required. You'd be surprised how fast one gets adjusted to it. Besides, more and more websites are starting to follow standards so the problem gets smaller by the day.

But if you really, really like ie and don't consider firefox - or any other browser - a viable alternative, then... I have nothing further to say. We make our own choices.

I've just given you a few good reasons not to use ie, and I've given a few suggestions on how to avoid the most common problem in making that choice. You decide.

Does anyone know what browser Russ is going to suggest for his new web design?

If he's going to suggest anything he should suggest any standards-compliant browser. Gives us users a few choices. I like choices. Choices makes me happy. Some people gets tired when there are too many choices. I get happy. Happy is good. Mmmmmm, gooood...

I'm glad to see he's not recommending any special brand, but rather update what you've got to the latest version. Choices are good. I like choices. When I get to choose for myself I'm happy. Happy is good. Mmmmmm, goooood...

Well, there's a site I go to that has limited functionality with my first-choice browser [Firefox] and hence I have to view it with IE.
I tried your theory of deciding it should support FF but it didn't work ...so back to the drawing board. 😉
Maybe in the long run that would work but for now I'm stuck with it at this particular website I visit. [and other sites too] 🙂

btw, I use IEView with FF so all I have to do is right click the page I'm on and select 'view in IE' [I guess you would know that one]

Actually, I heard about that one, but haven't tried it. I want IE as far away from my FF as possible. 😉

[Do you think an unsuspecting moderator may mistake IE and FF for dirty acronyms and ban us? Well, the good thing is I won't go alone in that case.]
