It has cost me to many good things in my life recently, and I'm done. Any advice on how to be sure I don't start again?

don't stick the bottle in your mouth

If that doesn't work there's always your local AA

Find a new addiction - you need something else that you can obsess over to take away the cravings.
Perhaps you could even set yourself a goal in chess and try to achieve it- I find since I have improved at chess I have been drinking less and less in the last two or three years.

I guess that depends on whether or not you're serious about quitting.

Quite sound words there, I have 'quit' drinking loads of times when I have woken up with a nasty hangover but relented the very same day once I have recovered.

Its much different for me now, I'm serious, i think it became a big problem. Does anyone have experience with this?

Yes I decided to seriously cut down a few weeks ago, now I am only drinking 2 bottles of wine a week at home, and usually go out once a week and drink what I like. It's a balance that is working for me but it's hard at times, I find it a lot easier if I buy loads of NICE soft drinks ar the supermarket, then at least there is an alternative to drink. If you do this make sure you get diet drinks as there can be quite a lot of calories in soft drinks too (might as well loss a bit weight at the same time).

AA can work if you really want to quit. you get out of it what you put in.

To get the most out of the program go to several meetings a week at first, usually it's suggested 3 a week for the first 90 days. also find a sponsor. This will help a lot and they'll give you some one to reach out to when you want to have a drink.
Once you find a meeting that you like and can see yourself going to every week, volunteer for a service position. The service position isn't anything major, it can be just showing up early to make coffee before every meeting, but it gets you more involved and helps keep you coming back to meetings on those days when you don't really feel like going.

And don't be turned off by all the religion that you'll hear at some meetings. some people need to use faith to get by so you'll hear it a lot. if it isn't what you are there for then just take the parts of it you need. A sponsor will help you with this as well.

If you have any more questions feel free to message me. I used to chair meetings and can give you some advice if you want it. main thing is to realize you'll be doing the work, and then commit to it.
