I hate to disagree with you bbarr but most "hill-billys" are in the same position that I am financially and I have managed to get a decent education so so can they. This is a self perpetuating state; once your in it you teach your children and they in turn teach thier children. They have the same chances as everyone else.

So what DID the hillbillies' friends say??

I chose to read this thread because it was titled "JOKE".

I still know the definition of that word, and was looking for some light entertainment - after having plowed through several pages of meaningless abuse between bbarr, ivanhoe, No1, et al. in at least three other "Debate" threads.

Can y'all PLEASE keep the debating about how to talk about hillbillies (and other groups that actually DO exist!) in a 100% PC way, to the Debating Forum , which I am avoiding for that very reason!

Please leave at least ONE Forum at RHP for lighthearted FUN!!

Pretty please?

I assume that was not a rhetorical question....

Forums are indeed the lifeblood of RHP.

To suit all tastes, there is a Forum for every possible interest.

However, if you want to post a joke, you would not, for example, chose the "Chess only" forum, now would you?

Similarly, the special forum for Debates allows all those who have a desperate need to convince others of their point of view, to do so.

My point was merely a gentle and friendly request not to transform all the other forums into a debates Forum as well!

Is this not a reasonable request??

And I would still like to hear EDG's answer to the joke!

Yes but jokes belong in the general forum.

This is completely false. Atheists are the last bastion of acceptable prejudice in this country. Rednecks can get elected to public office anywhere except for the most liberal areas (assuming for the moment that all rednecks are conservatives). It is physically impossible for an atheist to get elected to any public office in any state of the U.S. So don't come around crying a sob story about poor, opressed rednecks to me. They have more representation in this country than an atheist ever will.

CalJust has a point. (See, Cal, I don't object to everything you say.πŸ˜€) Sometimes you just need a lighthearted moment and that is why I came to read this thread too.

On the other hand, I have to agree with Kirk too. Shaul, I am shocked! When you invited me to join the Jewish Clan and I responded that I was not Jewish (not that I have an anti-Semitic bone in my body either. I really do have a lot of Jewish friends.) You, Shaul, explained that being Jewish was not expected but that one of the puposes of the clan was simply to oppose prejudice. I took that as a positive sign. I didn't actually join the clan, but I did think about it and in a positive way. I am shocked that you now "dont think [you] need to fight other peoples battles."

I hope no-one ever forgets Martin Niemöller's famous epigram:
First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was neither, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me.

(This is about the most reliable version I have found. See http://www.history.ucsb.edu/faculty/marcuse/niem.htm for a detailed and fascinating discussion of the history and provenance of the quote.)

Best Regards,
Paul
