I hate karaoke but have done it a few times. Usually a bit pissed.
Back on the mid 90s I was on a retail summer school course at Keble College and on a night out my group entered a contest in one of the Oxford pubs. We went to a fancy dress place and bought a load of cowboy and Indian stuff and a whip and did the theme from Rawhide, sort of Blues Brothers style. We won first prize of £70 which we gave to charity and got bought a few beers for our efforts. Good times and happy memories.
Any karaoke stories?
The old chess club 1995-2005 was held at a bar in a hotel. We were lucky it was usually quiet. About once a month they had karaoke. The place was always packed with non chess people. One fellow who had downs and severe speach impairment always sang Kenny Rogers "Once Twice Three Times a Lady." I'm not trying to be unkind, but the first time he sang the chorus "You once, trice, three time a wady, and I Wuv oooh." Some chess club members cracked up. I then stood up, asked if any chess club members wanted to sing. I'd pay the fee. Silence in the club area, it didn't stop or slow down the singer. After he finished I got up and sang Jim Reeves "Blue Boy." As it seemed like most everyone was singing Jim's "He'll Have to Go." He'll Have to is out of my range, which has always been limited. I can sing it in a higher key, but when I do it sounds like Willy Nelson. I can sing Blue Boy and sound like Reeves. The next time the karaoke guy was there I sang Rob Zombie's Dragula.
