I guess if you like the chains of single choice, a more versatile device isn't for you. Not sure how you get that quarter of the price, though. Unless you compare the incomparable.
Similarily, if I want an eReader, I buy an eReader which won't burn holes in my eyes when I can't put down a book for 12 straight hours. If I want to do something else bettered served by a colour back-lit screen, then I'll use the laptop, which I (and Sunbunz) already have (has).
Reread the thread and see who suggested an iPad when opinions on the Kindle were sought. That there will be the first comparison of Kindle/iPad in the thread.
If a Kindle is $139, and the iPad is $530, then I'll let you do the maths to see where the quarter came from.

Got the wifi and it's tops! At the time I purchased it, I didn't realise that the 3G didn't require monthly subs, and can be used for browsing with, although the browser is only experimental at this stage. If I had that knowledge, I probably would have gone for the 3G version.
The biggest selling point for me is that it supports pdf. Some pdfs have ti the others, I am much more likely to read books on an ebook rather than in paper form.

Besides, the comment on the price is that you are comparing to the price of a toaster and not on the toaster+kettle. More intellectual honesty, as usual.
Originally posted by SunburntThe kindle is as easy on the eyes as a real book. Like when reading a real book, you do need a high level of ambient light to avoid eye strain.

Re snippets: Exactly. Read a phrase/line/paragraph you like, simply highlight it, and it gets added to your collection of snippets, which is effectively treated like a book.
Annotations can also be added to lines/paragraphs/pages, but I haven't done this.
There is also a built in dictionary, if that's your kind of thang.

We'll stop arguing when he realises that my ePenis is 4 [EDIT for TumTum] 3.8129496402877697841726618705036 [/EDIT] times greater than his virtual penis.
I know, I know... I shouldn't compare the incomparable, but hey?

For reading proper books I think I prefer books to both. A bit ritualistic, but I like the feel of paper for a leisurely read.
Kindle and the iPad are great if you need to consult stuff on textbooks, read papers, magazine articles or other work-related reading.
Will find someone with one and borrow it, maybe.
