Is there a better Simpsons character?

He does his show, along with his (not always) trusty Sideshow Bob but then his life off camera is not what it seems. It's a character that thinks is mission is to make people laugh, yet he either grates or is laughed at. He often mistakes this as genuine laughter due to his clowning abilities.

There is also a tragicomedy side of it because Krusty, despite his wealth and continual presence in the TV, is filled with sadness and loneliness. This failure in his personal life has even fuelled to psychotic behaviours once in a while.

It's simply a great character.

Yeah, always loved Krusty. I like how he's enthusiastic about stuff that he and Bart get involved with but with an air of grim resignation, like h knows he couldn't escape the inevitable so he might as well feign enjoyment. It's really quite intricate.

Good points, I almost missed the feigned enjoyment. Definitely an important part of his character.

Am I right in thinking he used to be an alcoholic?

He has the best Simpsons line ever:

"All these rules, I feel like I'm in a strip club"

Correct. The ghost of alcohol and anti-depressants are a burden he needs to carry.

And what of Bob? Time spent in an asylum or some institution I think?

Bob was a deranged individual. A two-faced hypocrite, he was all smiles for Krusty while planning his downfall. For a while he suceeded, at which point he attempted to change Krusty's children's program into a more intellectual one. His attempts to introduce his superficial view of high-culture and elitism to the children were met with dismay and were foiled by Bart and Lisa. He never seemed to forget that and perennially holds a grudge against Bart.

It's been too long for me to analyse, but Krusty was by far my favourite character.

2010 GF Thread of the Year.

(There is an interesting parallelism between Krusty/Bob & Burns / Smithers).

Don't get me wrong, it's more observational than involved. I have both pity and amusement towards him, but in some ways it's only by looking through a magnifying glass that you get past the one-dimensional parts. Imagine he's a bug.

But he always does it for the kids.

Maybe he likes to think that by helping them, however cack-handedly, he is reclaiming some of his own lost childhood.
