I listened to it several times and tried to hear "Laurel", but I heard "Yanny" every time.

I think the gist is they added some high frequency components to the word to illustrate those who lack the higher frequency response. Presumably that happening mainly to old folks so the perception of the higher frequencies changes the perception of the actual word spoken.
