Hey folks, for every "Like" that Chess or Success gets from now up to November 18, we will earn $5 to use to promote chess in after school programs in poverty schools in Oregon. Share the love!🙂
Originally posted by Crockett1947Your "Chess For Success" facebook site doesn't exactly show that information on their main page. It does show a number for total "likes" for the site, but that isn't helpful in this case. Just the opposite. We see that and say "looks like you have your 150 likes". Then we move on without adding a new "like".
No, this is for "new" likes. We've done 55 of 150. Still a way to go.
I did poke around some more and found this link:

I think that is the information you are using. I did go ahead and "like" the site while I was there, but they need to put these numbers right in peoples face when they log onto the page. Then we can see where the number you need really is and help out!
<EDIT> If the above link doesn't work for you, just find "Chess For Success" after you log onto FaceBook, then on their page go down the left side to "Like Us" and follow that link. That should show you the current numbers for the "new 150 Likes"
(I just left a couple of minutes age and they had 60 new likes.)
Or to keep it simple, don't even look at any of the numbers shown. Just click "Like" and that will do the job! You did your bit and helped them out. You can get back to whatever you were doing.... 🙂

Here's a link where the current "new: count should come up. As far as I know we'll get the $5 even if we don't hit the 150, so each like is a donation. http://www.facebook.com/ChessForSuccess?sk=app_265289190181485
I didn't want to get too technical on the "poverty school" designation, but here goes. There is a federal program that provides for free and reduced lunch to elementary school students. It's part of a program that is usually called "Title I" (that's a Roman numeral one -- so it's Title One). We target our program into schools that have 50% or more students who qualify for Title I free and reduced cost lunch. Some of our schools are in the upper 90% category. We believe that teaching chess to these students will help them academically (and have a study that confirms this).

The hard part is they throw you a curveball and propose that you own a Cadillac Escalade and a Mercedes ML350, and the kids' private school is 20 miles away, and they tell you to factor in the gas bill.
It's where they teach poverty, duh. 😕
On the final exam you have to imagine you are a single mom with 18 children, and then accurately calculate how much more welfare you can bring in if you have 2 more children out of wedlock.
It's good that the school uses real-life examples.
