Game moves are archived off in to 'silos' in our database, by year, from the day the game was created. So long, long games can be a very minor annoyance!
So, from 2011, this game Game 8825816
edit : 2nd place Game 9524929
@russ saidLongest running game parameters: 21 day timeout, 28 day timebank, Black has used up his timebank, and queens are still on the board. I reckon it’ll all be over soon. Any year now.

Hmmm by my rough math both players would have to use up the 21 days before each move.
Basically 6 weeks for each set of moves.
8 or 9 moves a year 🤔
It doesn't work.
That longest game must of had long periods of one player not moving with the other player not claiming a timeout.
Even if you go by the time control and use all of your time it would be 9 moves a year and to break the 8 year record would require a game to last into 70 plus moves which is rare unless done on purpose.
That "longest game" needs an asterisk beside it. Obviously it was only possible by not claiming timeouts.
@patzering saidWhy?
The player Great King Rat hasn't moved in months.
Timeouts should be automatic losses.
Think of a single benefit!!
@patzering saidOn the one hand you are extolling the virtue of rules,
The time control is the agreed upon time limit.
If you violate that agreement you lose.
If we didn't follow those rules cowards like Bobby Fischer who ran away instead of playing would still be the champ.
and on the other you say you want the rule changed!
That does not make sense.
Additionally you have failed to give a reason why going
over the time control should be an automatic loss.
