Why agree to a time limit if you don't honour it?

The fact that players don't claim a win on time is weak on their part.

I want the rule changed?
No.
If you exceed the time limit it should be a loss and not at the discretion of your opponent.
That is a change to the rule.
In correspondence chess and on this site your opponent has the option
of claiming the win. You wish that it was automatic - as you have just reiterated.

I'm asking what the benefit could be.

Circumstances change, it isn't a question of "honouring it".

Why is it weak not to claim a win?
Stop saying ridiculous things!

The benefits would be honour among competitors.
You're from NZ?
Imagine us playing a sport say cricket...
You have won but I say play on!
You say the game is over.
Nope. Play on!
Yes we have the option of not claiming the win but we are talking about a game that is setting records based on not claiming a timeout.
That's wrong.

How would an automatic win affect honour amongst competitors?
This is getting sillier and sillier.

Your analogy with cricket or any other sport is fallacious.
If I am playing someone on RHP and they go over the time control they have not lost.
They have not lost until I claim the win.
It is at my discretion.
It is not a case of winning then saying "play on".

Takes special kind of people to enjoy that kind of game.
Saver the moment, make it last.

All timeouts claimed.
21/28
The game would have to reach move 70 and each player taking 3 weeks per move.
It can be done.

Are time wins automatic in OTB tournaments? Or do they still need to be claimed? (Rhetorical question).

Wins on time need to be claimed. If you are not looking for a rule change, then you need to go with that. (Some sites out there do have automatic time losses after a given period to stop delays in tournaments and the like).
