I notice Oda has given away her territory. Sweet.

I appear to be switching starting positions with my mortal enemy. Is that good?

Wow, it's been a long time since I've posted here.

I think it unlikely that Murakami will ever be back in Clan Uesugi's fold. Those arquebusiers that can be built there are amazing. I'll have to ship some of them back home to Kakizaki.

This is my first Shogun game and I'm sure I would be enjoying it more if I had given more time to diplomacy -- some real-life issues have been eating up my time and energy, but things seem to be stabilizing a bit. I'll try to be a bit more talkative.

Clan Uesugi, we are not switching starting positions. I have seized your capital and you do not have the strength to seize mine. You do not have the strength to seize yours back from me.

Nor do you have the strength to long hold on to the other territories you have seized from me. The tide has turned, Uesugi, and did, in fact, when you first lost your capital.

Your ability at grasping at the thinnest of silver linings inside the gathering clouds of your impending doom impresses me, however. It is good to keep one's chin up.

Nice move with the light cavalry, by the way. I had toyed with the idea of splitting my retreating peasant archers to block such a move, but I thought it more important to place them all on the coastline, where my fleet would give me some additional options.

My dear fellow, my income this season was pleasing, and I'll be receiving considerably more in the next. Meanwhile, you'll be left with both capitals and perhaps a few of my outlying provinces - if your troops pull themselves together and slink out of Murakami long enough to acquire them.

How long will you be able to hold onto Kakizaki, one might ask? If you'll allow me to hazard a guess: two more turns.

This is what I like: cultivated conversation between two well-bred killers. If only Ito had a quarter of your manners.

Clan Uesugi, I had meant to ask you if you had received my gift -- a crate of rose-tinted glasses -- but the question now seems moot. If you are pleased with your income, then so is Clan Takeda.

Perhaps I am seeing it all wrong, but it occurs to me that our incomes, while virtually the same at this point, are not the best possible predictor of ultimate success.

Currently, with near-equal incomes, you have difficult to defend zones that must be defended to keep your income as it is. Meanwhile, my zones are, on the whole, more easily defended. Furthermore, in order to knock me out of either of our capitals (or either of MY capitals, rather), you will have to spend a great deal more money than I will in order to effectively defend against your attacks.

Defense is cheap, while offense is expensive. The good news, which you seem far better than most to find, is that you will not be on the offensive for very much longer.

I find it rather unlikely that you will be continuing in the path you have so far taken. Your stressing of our switching positions is more than likely a ruse, as is your bold claim to be able to muster a force large enough to attack Fortress Kakizaki within two turns. Far more likely is a Uesugi withdrawal to your only well-defended province to await the inevitable.

My calculations may be off somewhat, of course, since they do not factor in the upkeep costs of my fleet, a burden you have cleverly avoided paying since sagaciously having your fleet sent to the bottom of the sea off the coast of Murakami. Clan Uesugi is indeed frugal.

In any case, I have pledged to enjoy my last two weeks in Fortress Kakizaki. How certain are you that I do not have even just a little more time than that? Spring is on its way and the cherry trees blossoming will be sorely missed.
