@mchill saidSounds like you are doing great things. People who feel good about changing the structure to their day tend to do well. They are already a success just by living today well, the rest comes naturally in its own time. In my experience people who set goals and feel nothing is achieved without reaching the goal tend to be the ones who crash or yo yo after passing the goal.
I'm overweight, but finally stopped all the excuses and started losing it. 3-4 miles of walking a day + smaller food portions + fewer snacks. It's working, but it sucks! 😕
The hard bit is dealing with the 'it sucks feeling'. I think playing games like chess helps. If I don't run I gain weight easily. It seems to link with being easily bored for me.
I like exercising, so that's never been an issue for me. When you get into a regular routine exercise will start to make you feel good rather than feeling like work in addition to your regular routine, try doing random exercise for the mere enjoyment of it, like walking near a beach, lake or some serene location. Yesterday I dribbled a basketball while walking to a playground with a ball court. Just shooting around was fun.
Eating healthy is much more about what you eat than how much. If the only thing you do is avoid sugar, you will see a drastic change, even if most of your diet stays the same. That includes fruit juice, but not regular fruit itself.
Congratulations on starting this. Don't let occasional stumbles stop or discourage you.
@mchill saidJust some friendly advice, don't over do it 3-4 miles of walking a day if you're doing it every day seems like a lot to me. No matter what your age.

@mchill saidWell done! Keep it up and you’ll soon start appreciating how good you look and feel. Walking is also good for improving your mood.

@drewnogal saidReally? How do you figure walking has affected my mood.....LOL...

Seriously when one hasn't been exerting themselves then all of a sudden start walking 3-4 miles per day it could be dangerous. Every trainer I know will tell you start out slowly and work your way up to it.

@mchill saidOnce you lose the weight, it's easy to think "I'm still trim, I don't need to worry about exercise for a while." It's way easier to stay on it once you do lose the weight because you feel better and hauling your extra weight around is not so much of a chore as it once was.

Good luck in your quest to rejoin the living!
I heard that all it takes to make a new habit is doing it for 45 days. Give it a try!
@very-rusty saidYou can do 4 miles in an hour easily (unless there are other health issues).

An hour is not too long to exercise. Yes, even every day.
@mchill saidI've put on the pounds in the last 10 years and its hard to lose as you get older.

My biggest success dieting was in my late 30s my 3 tip;
1. Eat only low GI food. You wont get hungry. (NO SUGAR)
2. NO ALCOHOL
3. Dance 5 nights a week.
Good Luck
@wolfgang59 saidThat is the reason for my walks so I don't gain, as you've said as one gets older harder to lose any weight you might put on.

I was quite active untill into my early 40's, after that I had to start taking care of what I ate and how much and big cut in sugar intake, I don't even use it anymore, unless of course it is already an ingredient in it, but do make an effort to stay away from it.
No drinking is a positive thing.
Dancing is great for you....5 nights a week is fantastic, you must be in decent shape.
