I still play magic the gathering!
I've got a white/blue deck featuring the new "theme deck" 'boost' cards - mega life!
With some walls of hope added!
They're also advertising magic the gathering in england - finally!
Does anyone know when the next magic the gathering tornament is held, is it in manchester?
Originally posted by ToeI like the concept, but would never do it as the system stands. I can see too many problems arising from it to invest the same amount of money on an electronic "card". As far as a cards monetary value goes, I should think it would certainly benefit you much more to have a real, tangible card in the long run. The pride of my collection right now is a foil Gilded Lotus. You can bet I'm going to sit on that baby for a while, while it's value skyrockets. 😉
There's an online version these days too. 'Cards' cost the same but are electronic only. They still buy/sell them on ebay though! Check the Wizards of the Coast website for details: you can play quite a few games under the free trial if I recall aright.
In all earnest though, I play the game for fun, not collecting or making money. I think the online game is a good idea, but it's hard to cough up the same amount of cheddar for it, especiall in the sense of buying singles. Even if the game loses its popularity, the truly rare cards will still have a market. Online though? I wouldn't bet on it.
Originally posted by odin22Check out wizards.com, you'll find listings of all DCI sanctioned tourneys there. I'm sure there will be a tourney in your are soon, the question is what kind of tourney are you looking for? Are you looking towards a pro card?

I like the mega life deck. If your tastes tend towards white, you can't go wrong with a soldiers themed deck. I am unsure what cards are still permitted for DCI play, but in unrestricted play those buggers sure pack a punch. 😉
And I thought I was the only left playing this game...
It's only a shame that this profit driven company (as they all are) implemented more and more ridicule rules to slowly destroy the game ...
As for us, we only play up to 'Ice Age' and don't allow any newer card (in order to avoid things like phaising out ...)

Originally posted by eyeqpcDon't do it. It's an extremely expensive game to play. You'll find yourself constantly wanting to purchase "just one more" outrageously expensive card to make your deck better. You'll end up sinking several hundred dollars into it and then one day you'll get tired of the whole thing and you'll have a huge box full of cards that you wouldn't be able to sell for a fraction of what you paid for them. You'd be better off just sticking to chess.
This card game sounds cool, gonna have to try this.
Originally posted by eyeqpcIgnore these naysayers bud, chess is grand but so is this game. These are those poor, unfortunate souls who broke free of their addiction. I on the other hand embrace my addiction with glee. Oh, the sweet bliss of CCG addiction......aaaahhhh. 😀

Originally posted by The Slow PawnA good idea: is the new version in the shops right now a card based version?
eyeqpc,
try 'Magic the Gathering' the computer game. That will give you a very good insight on what the game is all about (without spending hundred or thousands of dollar/pound) ...

There were two previous Magic spin-offs, a terrible Playsation game that really was not Magic at all, and a rather good PC version that alas had no real time commands, so if you try running it on a modern PC the "move about the map" bit is impossible.
The new one I have seen for about £20 now, but I've no idea what's in it.

So I got tons of cards from 1994 or so through Ice Age... how would they stand up in a game vs. newer cards?
Did someone change the rules again? I need an update on the state of Magic.

I used to play a blue/black/white deck focused on counterspelling and mass destruction (winning eventually through milling the opponents library)... That deck with all moxes, time-walk, library of alexandria etc. really kicked arse (I did use proxies for those cards I couldn't afford :-)
But I'm not too familiar with the latest editions etc. so wouldn't know for sure

PS: If anyone knows about a new computer 'magic game' please let me know as I've been through the old one ...
I worked for Wizards of the Coast for four years, fun place to work for the most part. They know what they're doing with regards to CCG's.
WotC also owns D&D and the rights to the whole d20 RPG format.
I never really got into playing magic all that much, but did manage to get a bunch of the cards while I was there.
