Wow, that takes me back!
I played series 1 back in the day (1994-95, I was in high school then).
I understand it's grown very big these days, with several different serieses and whatnot.
I still have my original deck, too! Maybe it's, like, worth money or something...
If you indeed have cards from 1994-1995 they are worth a fortune ... check e-bay and type in a few names of 'rare' cards you possess and you'll see ...
I can't say that I'm not a little envious ...

Ooooooh....
I've got "Karma"
and "Circle of Protection: red"
and "Swamp creature" (gains +0/+1 for every creature it defeats)
and "pestelence"
and "wrath of God" (burries all creatures in play)
These are the ones that I remember that were worth a little bit of money when I stopped playing...
I think I will check out e-bay; maybe I can get enough money to take a nice road trip or something...
Originally posted by player420It these cards are from the 'beta' series (black surrounding) then the wrath of god should be worth approx 30 pounds ... Dunno about the other but good luck ...

Any others still playing the game??
I think I started with 3rd edition and picked up some Beta's and perhaps a few Alphas along the way.... up to about Ice age. I might have a few cards from whatever set came after Ice Age.
Fun game. I've got a box that is about 3' by 2 1/2' almost full, 5 rows of cards standing on end.... All in sleaves... All sorted out with only perhaps 6 each common cards and enough manna to make at least 6 super cool decs, or several playable decs.
One of the best decs I think I ever made was white and red. I could force people to tap mana, and had a card that doubled all mana, and another that gave me one live for every land tap in a round. I was also dealing one point of damage for every tap. I blocked with 1/1 creatures and healed whatever else went on. I could kill the table if I had my cards just right.
The deck got sad, since if anyone got anything going they would take me right out first... my deck took a bit of time to get rolling.
Fun game.

I will also add that the guy who inspired me to buy my first chess book also inspired me to make that deck. He used to beat my chess all the time. I got a book and did some learning and the rest is history. In Magic he played a super fast green deck and would always have a ton of small creatures and mana out the ying-yang. He didn't like my new deck, or my new chess. 😉

I used to play soooo much! I always used to play insane combo decks or decks that just make people mad (millstone decks, super control prison decks), where it makes the other guy want to quit....hehehehehehe.....😀
Forgive the ignorance, but I am quite interested in these sort of things.

I'm more than a little ashamed to admit that I have played this game quite extensively. I started playing when "The Dark" came out and have only tapered off with the last few sets. My favorite deck was always my Kobold deck. It seldom won, but I have never seen anyone else play that before.
Magic players have several cards. They decide a deck to make.
Land give you mana
you have some creatures that cost mana to come out.
you have some spells that cost mana
you have other cards that do other stuff that is neat.
every round you get a new card for your hand, put a land card down if you can. When you tilt that land on your turn that is a "tap".
You tap, and get mana to cast spells or lay a creature down. You decide, and you hope for the best.
Everyone has some cards in hand, and land out now, and creatures out, and perhaps some other enchantments that might do things like protect you or a creature... give a creature flying etc....
Each creature has a ratio on them, 2/1 creatures do 2 damage and can take 1 damage and die. If they die they go to a pile where you just might to get it back if you have the right card.
If a 4/4 creature is blocked by a 2/1 creature it will take 2 damage, but kill that creature with 2 and have 2 left over for the person playing the deck... I think that is how it worked... you can block several creatures against a single attacker.. or spread it out. Great fun.
So many rules, you can do so much... but that is a general idea of what might happen in a game.
I am a Magic fiend. I play almost every day. Hell, I play Magic more than chess (Magic and cigs, the only two addictions stronger than chess). I am notorious for my goblin deck. I am rather enamored with red for that matter.
I am curious, anyone been playing from the last two sets they released (Mirrodin and Darksteel)? Any thoughts/feelings about this artifact cycle? It certainly is different from what has come before, but I am concerned about how it will affect the game in the long run.
