That says it all I guess😕
He was the best Dutch chessplayer for years(maybe all time best).Chess Worldchampion 1935-1937.He beat Alekhine but then lost the title again to him in a rematch.

Do not take my naive veiw of chess players as the gospel for Australian players knowledge. i do not read many chess books or history so i am not surprised i have not heard of him.

I know of him, and have played through some of his games. In facti have a book on the middlegame written by him which i'm going through at the moment.

Besides that I'm a little in the dark.

Lots of talk that Alekhine was doing a lot of drinking back then. Still a great chess player, and quite an ambassador for the game as well.

I have heard of him, and that he was considered the best player in the world for a while.
But, can you tell us one thing:
How to say Euwe correctly 😵

Excellent! All of the books he wrote himself are top quality.Though,of course, his work on openings can be a bit outdated. But,beware,he has lend his name to some dubious ones too.Not for the money, but just 'cause he had a hard time saying 'No' to people. If the book is written by Euwe and 'someone else' I wouldn't be too sure of the value.Though oppinions differ,of course😴

What's the title of your book?

Alekhine drank all of the time, that's no excuse. He just underestimated Euwe and didn't prepare for him, thinking he would easily crush him.In the rematch he prepared well and Euwe got crushed.Alekhine was the better player,no doubt.
Indeed,he was a great ambassador and the best president FIDE has ever had.😏

ps: You might notice...I'm a bit of a fan😉

Don't think he was ever considered the best player. One of the top GM's,yes, but not the best. And in practical play he could never live up to that standard.
However,he was the best theoretician!😏
No idea how I can explain the correct pronounciation though😕

Who knows who's the best on a given day? But beating Alekhine in a fair fight - not easy to do.

Genna Sosonko wrote a piece that gives some insight into Euwe's skills and character...highly recommended:
Part 1 - http://www.chesscafe.com/text/skittles167.pdf
Part 2 - http://www.chesscafe.com/text/skittles169.pdf

And his instruction books are excellent, especially the "Chess Master vs. Chess Amateur" series.
