Stop eating red meat. If the pain stops. It's probably gout. See a Doctor for treatment.
If it's an injury due to trauma or over-activity: Warm compresses and immobilization. Not much else can be done outside of surgery. Which is rarely reccomended in the distal extremities.

I had wondered about gout. Do you get that in the metatarsal area? I’ve only got it in one foot.
I picked up this pain after a few days of long walks and I think my walking shoes were a bit over tight.

Friend of mine just broke his.
Hospital fitted him with a boot.
Took about 6 weeks to heal.

@divegeester saidYes, I broke a metatarsal bone a few years ago. Get walking as soon as the pain is bearable. I needed an orthopaedic boot at first to be able to put weight on the foot. Immobility ultimately does more damage than the original injury. It took over a year before I could walk entirely pain free again.
Anyone had one?

Seriously a broken bone is in the foot can be very painful. He will probably need some 40 ouncers to help.
