so i'm playing in a tournament and just need one point from my final game to progress to the final two, i'm already assured a place in the next round but if i lose my game there will be at least 3 maybe 4 depending on the result of another game... tbh i'd say there will be 4 in the final group if i lose.

now, in my game it's not looking good... i may draw but i would need him to mess up a bit.

is it wrong to slow play the game (7/14) in the hope that my opponent is unable to play for a while (for whatever reason, death, smallpox, dingo stole his computer etc.) and end up getting the win through timeout and advancing to a mano y mano dual for the title?

In your scheme of things and view of the world, does a cheap shot/guilt

laden/worthless end ever justify questionable and/or unethical means?

technically it is not wrong, but it might be 'unsporting'. i was on the receiving end of this kind of practice shortly after i joined, and i found it annoying. however, now i wouldn't care (or, probably, even notice). i'd say, just decide which standard you feel most comfortable with (strict legality vs strict legality + 'sportsmanship'😉, and go with that.

Perceived unsportsmanship.

Would you consider a 1200 rater who plays against a 2300 rater for 30 moves to be unsportsmanlike because the game was really over at move 15?

At worst it could be annoying to opponent but tough titty, life goes on.
