My understanding is the so called 'Illuminati' no longer exists as a group or organization, but every generation has people who regard themselves as the illuminated ones.
The name says it all. It says "We are the illuminated ones, but you not so much. The world needs us to control and direct humanity (this means you) because we are smarter and wiser, so get used to it."
They could just as easily say "We are ego driven control freaks", because as far as I'm concerned that's all it really means.
