This is the second time I have had this problem, I have to get to RHP now using IE because Firefox is in a loop and won't get out, does a FF update but comes back with an error message saying it could not complete the update and then just starts the update again and keeps cycling that way, can't get FF to run. This happened before but seemingly went away but now several months later the same thing is back. I tried the usual, changed security levels and such to no avail. Anyone having this same trouble?

Try this:
Tools-->Options-->Advanced
Click on the "Update" tab
Uncheck the boxes that make it automatically check for and install updates.
I had problems with FF every time I installed it. It runs for a while and then tries to take control of the computer. I got tired of playing its stupid games and finally quit using it at all. I don't understand it. PC Magazine recommends it highly, and that is probably the highest reputation of any mag. Figure it out????????????

My browsing experience is incomparable using FF to IE. For one thing, I can never get over how much clutter (flashing ads, pop-ups, etc) there are with IE.
Then there are the infinite customisations you can make with FF. It really is leaps and bounds above anything else I have tried.
I can't see how a piece of software can suddenly start trying to take control of your PC. Care to expand on your problems, to see if we can get to the bottom of them.

It shouldn't take very long if you have broadband. Just be sure to make a list of all the extensions and add ons you would like to keep and make sure they are compatible with the latest version of FF. It will probably save you time in the long run. It may have become corrupted somehow with the many viruses you are always managing. FF really is the best and easiest browser I have found. Thanks to everyone here making the suggestion, I made the change and if I can do it you can too. I promise you and no offense but it is not the browser that is the problem it is the user. Once you learn it, there is no comparison. IE is junk, not totally but I would estimate FF to be at least 40% better. I really think the debate has been settled. I wouldn't be surprised if Bill Gates prefers to use FF.

Originally posted by cashthetrashTHE FEBE extenstion takes care of this for you automatically. My FF setup is automatically backed up every Sunday. If anything ever gets corrupted, I just roll back to the last good backup. I can also put these backups online, and in a matter of seconds, I can have the exact same setup as my home pc.
Just be sure to make a list of all the extensions and add ons you would like to keep

Why don't you just use Internet Explorer or Safari for Windows? Why use Firefox?
For instance, the greasemonkey add-ons for RHP are almost worth the switch alone.
re/security comparisons between IE & FF:
"A 2006 Symantec study showed that Firefox had surpassed other browsers in the number of vendor-confirmed vulnerabilities that year through September; these vulnerabilities were patched far more quickly than those found in other browsers. Symantec later clarified their statement, saying that Firefox still had fewer security vulnerabilities than Internet Explorer, as counted by security researchers. As of August 22, 2007, Firefox 2 has six security vulnerabilities unpatched, the most severe of which was rated "less critical" by Secunia. Internet Explorer has ten security vulnerabilities unpatched, the most severe of which was rated "highly critical" by Secunia."
If PC's came with FF pre-installed, 80% of users (who currently use only IE) would surely say "why change to IE - it's inferior". As it is, many people are MS sheep & some don't care & others are just lazy.
I just don't understand this, sonhouse, you seem to have more problems with FF than anyone else I've ever met. You must emit some weird anti-firefox frequency elctro-magnetic resonance or something. Firefox is miles better than any other browser I have ever used and to be honest you're the only guy I know who's not had a good experience. Do you ever set off scanners in airports, or stop people's watches by your mere presence?

Good shot Squelch.
I initially changed to FF at home purely for the RHP add-on.
Thread 62326 ...ahhh, the nostalgia, my very first forum post.
Anyway, what with NoScript and a bunch of other tools, I'll never go back to IE (and "back" is most definitely the operative word).
I just wish politics didn't get in the way of my deploying FF at work...too many "baa"'s 🙁
