So our own intelligence is relative to one's interlocutor. How interesting.

i'm not going to name names, but there seem to be a few of these about here at GF. what's the story here? a lot of people think that ability at chess is an indicator of intelligence, but the evidence suggests otherwise. i'd like to advance a theory, which i think is quite elegant in its simplicity and explanatory power. it is simply this:

that such peopl ...[text shortened]... notice a thing), ask your carer to PM me (you know, the one who is reading this out to you).
Would you agree that, unlike general intelligence, exceptional chess ability

seems to reflect specialized nonverbal skill sets such as spatial perception?

No, it shows that a person has dedicated a lot of time on a specific persuit....nothing more.

This thread seems to be a very childish attempt to say that because somebody is better at chess than you then they are obviously a moron for spending so much time doing so, despite the fact that you yourself spend several hours a day doing the same thing....

The fact that you have failed to show improvement in all of this time is, of course, conveniently omitted.

i think you've just shown that you'd qualify as a research subject in this study. i didn't at any point say that everyone who has a high chess rating is a moron, just that some are. also, i didn't at any point say that anyone is a moron because they choose to spend a lot of time on chess. i am sure that there are many highly intelligent people with a high level of chess ability - including some who contribute to this forum - and who spend a lot of time studying chess. good luck to them, they have my admiration. my OP was about people - again, including some who "contribute" to this forum - who seem to have a surprisingly (to me) high chess rating, considering the low level of general intelligence displayed in their forum posts.

Ah, the classic arguements of a defeated man - trying to change the boundaries by which he has failed to reach.

seriously, i'm offering you a job (as research subject), conditional on the project getting funded.

the only fly in the ointment is that it seems you've already had the pre-frontal lobotomy, so you won't be much use for the before/after research.

Alll fancy words, to be sure, but they are still ultimately meaningless and prove nothing other then your childish incompetence.

Blackamp, i think your pride is wounded. (Something else is wounded but I don't want to go into unsavoury details.)

chess is a motor skill. nothing to do with intelligence.
