I'd like to start a new thread on what you think is the most important thing in the world.
I think humour is the most important thing in the world. Well, after food and shelter of course. Oh yes, and family and loved ones. But then after that definitely humour. No, wait, there's also compassion and tolerance, I guess they'd have to come before humour, but after that it's definitely humour....or maybe sincerity, but then it's gotta be humour...unless you include honesty, or would that come under sincerity? If you combined them I guess that'd be OK too...but humour must certainly come after that....oh, did I get love? Damn, well I guess love'd have to go up pretty high there, but humour...oh damn, just forget the whole thing .... 😀

Themost important thing in the world is to be able to live in peace, without the threat of terrorism.

My "favourite" one is that Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize but he was instrumental in instigating the bombing of Laos (around the clock for nine years). There are still bombs with "Made in the USA" written on them lying in the ground there (I know because I was working as a journalist there; I drove over one! Thankfully, it didn't go off).
Little colourful spinning bombs are still picked up by children who throw them to each other. When I was there in 1997 I saw the photos of what was left of five boys who no longer had faces. Yet the USA never officially fought a war in Laos and still refuses to claim responsibility. When I interviewed the then Deputy Secretary of State about it he said "We're here to talk about the future, not the past."
I agree that we need to fight the War on Terror. But, especially with Christmas coming, I can't believe Australia is about to be dragged into another war by a weak leader (talking about John Howard, not Bush). My cousin is in the army. I don't think he will be sent but someone's son will be. I don't agree with the way Saddam and Kim Jong Il are running their countries, with torture and deprivation, but even Australia has been debating whether to allow ASIO to detain and question adults and children as young as 14 for up to 48 hours. Fighting fire with fire? If the price of fighting terror is to kill children and even torture your own children, the price is too high.
Having compassion for one another is a lot more important than fighting terror.
