I ran 10 k for the first time ever...i did it in 1hr 6mins and change...and i did it on the tread mill. I've decided to go back into the gym for my running for the next while so i can work on my speed over 5k (like sam said), and then use weights and do situps and stuff to try and get my overall fitness up...but i'll be doing 10K+ once a week.
I intend to do a 13 mile run at the end of april regardles of my time. I plan to be dropped 13 miles away from the house, and try to make my way back...If i can do it i will be happy that the marathon is within my capabilities.

Way to go! Keep motivated and take it easy. I used to run 35 miles a week, but then developed plantar fasciitis. Make sure not to run on concrete or asphalt too much and use the best shoes you can afford. Good that you're mixing other exercise because running alone won't cut it.

Well done, but get off the treadmill and run outside, far better for you.

Its a big jump from 10K to 13.1 miles and April may be too close to do such a long run with no previous experience of running that far.

Rather than picking distances to run why not content yourself with running for say 90 minutes. You run from your house for say 40 minutes and then retrace your steps on the way back, it will take you longer to cover the way back.

After a while increase the time to say 60 minutes from house, then 90 minutes.

That way there is less pressure on you to run XYZ distance, but you get used to running for longer. In due course you will find it easier to cover the 1/2 marathon distance, which I would estimate, based on your 10K time, will take you close to 3 hours to complete.

You need to get used to running for longer, which won't happen in a few months.

I'm on the same plan. I registered for my first ever 1/2 marathon at the end of March. Yesterday I did 6 miles - my longest ever. ~ 9 minute miles.

The training plan basically calls for 1 extra mile on the long runs each week, and 1/2 of the long run 2x each week (so 3.5 2x this week, followed by 7 on the weekend). Unfortunately though the weather is going to suck this week here. On the other hand though I got a bruised toenail so it might be a good break to let it recover.

FYI I have a great GPS app called Endomondo that tracks my times and routes. It's on the Droid phone and uploads to endomondo.com.

I was on the road...going back to the gym was done on purpose so i could get some weights and situps after i finish my runs. I will go back outside in April maybe once my general fitness has improved ( i will be doing road running in China aswell, so mid March really). I need to get my overall fitness up, so i need to stay in the gym for now.

Don't do it at night, or even in the dark. You might crash up a hill into a lorry with no lights. 😉

I can almost hear the panting and smell the sweat. Good job, it takes stick–to–itiveness and perseverance to accomplish such a feat.

It'd be 10 KFC's for you 😛

Let me tell you, it was hard enough....harder the next day trying to walk to the supermarket. My next plan is to get a bus to the city, and then run home (about 3.5 miles). I'll be doing that next Monday maybe, till then it's 5-6k on the treadmill and then weights and situps.

I have no qualms about the speed, that will come with practice. I just had to see if i could do it.
