Not for the first time I was nearly squished today by a bus. (Have a weird thing when I haven't been sleeping of overriding my brain and stepping out in front of traffic). - Although I don't find God or anything, I do always come away with a renewed appreciation of life.

In Belfast years ago I got off the bus then in a rush started to cross the road as the bus took off, managed to catch the edge of it and landed on the ground. My own fault, stupidly not paying attention but nothing happened in the end, just embarrassment.
Only real 'near death' experience was in Peru about 15 years ago, mounting biking in the Andes. A combination of an old bike with dodgy breaks and me going too fast in dry conditions. Hit a rock going around a corner and came off the bike smashing myself on the side of the mountain, had I gone off the other side it was a steep drop to a possible death. Ended up spending a night in hospital anyway with damaged ribs.
No change after it.

several times i had a medical professional tell me i was lucky to have survived
1) motorcycle, truck, car wrecks
12? 15? it's so hard to remember when the same brain used for counting is the brain used for target practice
2) overdoses of various concoctions
30% of which were "legal" in the eyes of the law, except of course for quantity
3) wild animals
chupacabra are real, meeting one after dusk can make the heart do funky things
4) long drops, sudden stops
no details available
not once did i ever experience the standard "light at the end of the tunnel", or meeting folks long passed or even those never met yet croaked for sure
is there a set of rules or guidelines to determine the reality of any of these long ago experiences?

@ghost-of-a-duke saidI once had an uncanny experience which, at the time I did not associate with nearness of death, but when I described it to someone else later, he said it was a near-death experience. Nothing remarkable was happening, as far as any eternal observer would have noticed, I was lying in my bed (no, it was no on fire, but internally, I was).

@ghost-of-a-duke saidI was cycling when a car decided to do a U-Turn as I was overtaking the stationary traffic on the approach to a red-light. Well, apparently that's what happened as I bounced onto my head & shoulder and can't remember the incident (or much of the following two weeks).

That day I'd decided to wear my helmet. Most days back then I didn't bother.
Don't get on the bike without one now.
I still have the clavicle-hook-plate on my key-ring that was inside my shoulder for 12 weeks holding things together while the tendons and ligaments healed from being sewn back together (no bones broken).
A few years later I had a heart-attack - unfortunately I can remember everything about that one - most painful thing I've ever gone through, and very scary.
The cycling accident didn't change me at all (mostly as I can't recall it ever happening)
The heart attack certainly make me appreciate life more. Not sure it changed me much though.
