I am going to be in New Orleans on March 16th-19th. Any suggestions on what to do or where to go? Looking for some new things to do.

Thanks!

Man, where to begin. I visit N.O. quite often. Begin your day with a visit to Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter. It was a favorite hang out of Paul Morphy's who lived across the street .

Lucky man! I've never been but have been told it's great. Top tip - don't annoy the police there!

Go to a restaurant called the Gazebo on Decatur Street. There is a master there named Jude Acers who will give you a game. He might be a GM, I'm not sure

Does he play at the restaurant? Hmmm, crawfish and chess. Great combo. But, the pieces would get sticky.

You'll have to pay him $5 (maybe more now) and he'll probably try to sell you a book or two. He destroyed me very quickly, but he critiqued my game afterwards. He's not always there, and quite frankly, I haven't seen him the last few times I've visited. Possibly I just missed him.

Its always been something I've wanted to do, maybe its too late. He's been advertisindg for so long I assumed he was quite old.

If he's still advertising he's probably still there. It appears from the book that I bought from him ( yes, he talked me into buying one ) he should be in his late fifties. The bookmark that came with the book had his bio printed on it. And, it had an interesting fact, he used to room with Janis Joplin back in the 60's.

Well my pitiful game with Jude Acers sure wasn't worth 5 bucks. As far as I remember, I was lost in a matter of minutes. But, $5 for the experience and the atmosphere of it all was worth it. Playing a chess game exposed to the sights and sounds (and smells) of the French Quarter with it's rich heritage, knowing that Paul Morphy lived and played chess in that very local ( there is a statue of him nearby ) justified the small expense for me.
