@MartinS saidWell, I was born in the 80s so no I don't remember shillings or newspaper chippies but I do remember chip vans and getting the chips In paper. Don't think the phrase 'as cheap as chips' is relevant anymore... About £4 for a portion of chips I think in most chippies now.
Who remembers going into the chippie as a teenager and asking for a shilling's worth of chips and some of the scraps?
Which by the way, were all served the proper way, in newspaper that God knows how many people had read, touched etc
Question - who knows what the "scraps" were

Overnight, some unscrupulous character sneaks into the tavern and places a jar of pickled eggs (extra large) on every table...
@MartinS saidI can remember fish and chips in newspaper, not sure when that was stopped.

Were “scraps” the pieces of batter?
@MartinS saidWhy not?

@Torunn saidOh no. Well I, for one, will find a way to get some in, now maybe at Easter disguised as Easter eggs.🤔👍
I understand that pickled eggs and similar bad smelling items are controversial here and therefore they are banned from this place from now on.
@Great-Big-Stees saidAs you will read in earlier posts, somebody has managed to place a bowl of pickled eggs on every table. I will take a timely vacation, back again after the place has been properly aired.

@Torunn saidAs the proprietress of this establishment you are, of course, well within your rights to do as you see fit but isn’t there some room for “give and take” instead of what seems to, at least me, a bit of a radical move in hopes of there being some action taken in your absence?🤔

@Great-Big-Stees saidI'm just taking a vacation, that's all in the hopes that the pickled eggs are gone with their smell and all when I'm back. If you eat them quickly I'll be back earlier. 🙂

@Torunn saidMeanwhile, a fresh delivery of pickled eggs arrives at Torunn's Tavern...

@Ghost-of-a-Duke saidStees who is in temporary charge of the tavern is delighted.

@The-only-Mr-T saidLOL - when I was about 5 (60 odd years ago) Dad would buy me three pence worth of chips and I struggled to eat them all; three pence is around 5 cents I think.
