A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by
Microsoft as the most destructive ever. This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee . This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital information for its functioning are stored.
This virus acts in the following manner:
It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with
the title: "A Card for You".
As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened the computer freezes so that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+ del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York , according to news broadcast by CNN.
This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft itself.
So ! don't open any mails with subject: "A Virtual Card for You." As soon as you get the mail, delete it even if you know the sender
!!!

Please pass this mail to all of your friends.
Forward this to everyone in your address book. I'm sure most
people, like myself, would rather receive this notice 25 times than not at all.

Funny, I got some kind of "e-card" e-mail a day or two ago. Didn't open it because I don't know anyone who would be gay enough to send me an "e-card".

Symantec say that this was a hoax, started in 2001.

I was wondering how a virus could permanently destroy a hard drive - how could it stop you from formatting and reinstalling?

There was a virus able to damage permanently the HDD. It changed the speed of work, thus burning the stuff. This you'd not reinstall.

Really? What was that? Was it a back door Trojan by any chance? Do you know the name?....... 😉

In fact I've never encountered it personally, but the thing is technically possible, and there were particular attacks.

Sorry mate but I find this hard to believe - have you got a link to a site explaining how it does that?

In fact no. I wont stick to the idea of this stuff. It might have been a hoax, of which i'm a victim.

Would it be possible to force a drive into power save mode before the heads were parked, thus scratching the surface of the disc. Just a suggestion.

The only way a virus could physically damage a harddrive is through excessive disk activity, but even then it would have to be a LOT (we're talking months and months) of continuous activity and a HDD that's old and on it's way out anyway.
