We'll review the play."
I think we've all bought into the "it's a judgment call" theory regarding penalties or fouls, so that we've come to accept that there's these calls are somehow impervious to a review. But is there really anything sacred about these calls?
Penalties are actually very much like the "non-judgment" calls. When someone blatantly shoves a receiver 4 seconds ...[text shortened]... ew as long as we have a system that prevents excessive delays to the game.
They go under the hood for 5 minutes. Then the ref comes out announces on his mic:
"After reviewing the play, while it's true that the safety bumped the WR 6 yards beyond the line of scrimmage and so should be penalized under the rulebook, well, hey, it's just not a big enough deal to have to call a penalty on, considering the fact that it didn't really have an effect on the play. Therefore, the ruling on the field, and Pretty Boy's pick-6, stands. Touchdown!"
If not, how do you propose to prevent this scenario?
Originally posted by sh76Officials should be calling penalties as they are written in the rule book. I've seen many plays where a big play gets called back for holding even though the holding had no impact on the play. The officials shouldn't be considering whether the penalty had a "direct impact" on the play - unless there's a very specific criteria like not calling pass interference if the "ball wasn't catchable". Everyone would know this criteria, and it could easily be used in making the video review.

So in the instance you mention, if it was indisputable that the WR was clearly bumped beyond 5 yards past scrimmage, the penalty would have to be called. (In all likelihood, a play only 6 yards past scrimmage would probably be disputable).
Obviously, there are many cases where it's hard to say if a penalty happened or not. But these would be "disputable" and the call on the field would stand. And the official would not have to specify all of his reasons. He'd just say, "the call on the field stands".
As I said before, it's likely that you would find that the officials do a lot better job than anyone gives them credit for.
Originally posted by MelanerpesI would also like to see rules called as they are written and not looking at the game situation and holding a whistle. I do however believe that pass inteference is very difficult to call because the offensive and defensive player are often bumping each other and that virtually every pass play would end up being a potential review.

Originally posted by darvlayFresh from my 1-3 start (same as in MLB), I'll take all the favorites this time. The Ravens and Cowboys looked great, but going into those thunderdomes and playing better teams will be too much. The Saints have been skating for a month and if GB had won, I probably would have taken the Pack, but the Cards haven't shown any sign of having a D and unless the Saints turn the ball over all day, I think they'll outscore them big time. The Chargers have too many weapons for the Jets IMO.
Ravens over Colts
Chargers over Jets
Cards over Saints
Vikes over Cowboys

I predict a San Diego-Colts AFCCG and a Cowboys-Cardinals NFCCG. We'll see, I guess, but by far NO has the worse doldrums of the bye-week teams!

the typical "flagrant foul" call happens when it's a fast break and someone is driving full speed to the basket, and the defender is going full speed to get to the basket in time to block the shot.
When the two bodies weighing around 250 pounds meet at full speed, even the slightest bump will cause someone to slam hard to the floor. The officials think that it must have been a flagrant foul and call it, even though the slo-mo replay shows there was nothing more going on than a normal foul -- and I've seen this sort of thing happen where the defender got all ball.

Both have huge O-linemen, good defense......but I like favres experience.
( trying to forget his reputation for picks in the play-offs )
really looking forward to that game

Originally posted by Hugh GlassIndeed! I would rather be anyone on the Cowboys other than Flozell. That is the one intangible in the Vikes favor since it may result in penalty, upon penalty. There can be no sane way of gameplanning a monster like Allen. Makes me think of the Suh kid from Nebraska! I nkow allen is a DE and not DT, but same monster truck playing style, almost unstoppable! I forsee the Cowbys running on the other side of this monster!

OK, the Jets ruined my comeback, but at least I'm batting .500 now. The Conference championships are here, my picks:
Colts over Jets - Of course, the Jets have surprised me so far and an upset is possible. But the Colts looked dominating against the Ravens stuffing the run and getting pressure against Flacco. The Jets need to control the ball to have a chance, but their running game really wasn't that effective against SD; take away the one 53 YD TD and they averaged less than 3 a carry and had only 5 first downs. Peyton Manning went to a strictly short passing game to avoid the Raven rush and the Colts will probably use the same game plan against NYJ. The Jets have momentum, but the Colts have the better team and home dome. Indy by 10.
Vikings over Saints - Both teams shook off late season doldrums by scoring impressive victories. But the performance of last week was by the Viking defensive line which utterly overwhelmed the Cowboys and was in Tony Romo's face all day. I don't expect them to be as dominant this week, but I give the Vikes a clear edge there. Both of these squads have a lot of playmakers on offense, so I think they'll be quite a bit of scoring. I just think the Vikings will come up with a few more big plays on D and win a tight, exciting game. Minnesota by 3.
