To all you hockey fans:
The NHL madness has begun. I am fricking lovin' it. It's been too long. This free agent/trade stuff is simply bananas.
Calgary, Edmonton, Florida and Philly are big winners so far landing some decent talent.
Biggest losers so far? My team, the Maple Leafs. It's going to be a long and disastrous season, I'm afraid. But I'll still bleed blue once the beatings have been administered.
Originally posted by KneverKnightThat's exactly the problem. Same Old Leafs. Old as in the Good Old Boys running the show who are more concerned with making money than hockey. Old as in the average age of the players.
That sounds familiar. Leaf fans used to pray for Ballard to kick the bucket so that some good players could be signed. Same old Leafs.
Experience is great to have on a team, but there's only so much an entire team of "veterans" can teach each other, and most of it has to do with prostate health. The key, expecially in the new era of the salary cap, is going to be picking up good young talent. Why? Because $39 million can only buy so many superstars. The Leafs have no long term plan, because they never thought they needed it before - "we'll just pick up a few expensive oldies before the playoffs like we do every year...pass me another $100 bill would ya? My cigar is fading." I don't think their scouts even know what a good young player looks like anymore.
(Having said that, our young goalie draft pick Tuukka Rask looks like a step in the right direction, although he won't be playing much for a few years.)
Originally posted by MIODudeFergeson has been doing crap. Why sign Allison over Palffy? Bizarre. And even though Quinn isn't GM anymore, he doesn't like to coach young players. He simply doesn't have the patience for them. Unfortunately, having and developing good young players will be key in the next few years now that the Leafs can't go buy superstars whenever we feel like it (not that we ever picked up the "superstars" when we had a chance, but there was always the option).
Now that Pat Quinn isn't the GM, he's not making the calls anyways.. so.. its John Ferguson Jr.. which. .I think he's been doing well.. he has been quiet this round so far, but they already have to much wrapped up in contract players.. personally.. I think they should have bought out Belfour..
<sigh> Go...Leafs? <sigh>
Originally posted by PBE6Palffy was too pricey. Allison's contract was laden with bonuses which don't count against the salary cap.
