First time i've been able to get to the Interwebs since i came to China on Holiday. We don't have cctv9 (the english speaking chinese channel) so i don't know how bad it is with the meltdown in Japan....how bad is it?

reactor 5 & 6: problems with cooling systems, but so far relatively ok.
foreigners fleeing tokyo (240km from the plant), but as I understand the japanese not so much. so far it still seems (to me) that the nuclear problem is absolutely dwarfed by the scale of other problems. yet the media is having an orgasm with the nuclear plant stuff of course.

and china is so far I really doubt there's much chance of meaningful amount of fallout, even if some worst case scenario took place. they could drop a nuke there and it still probably wouldn't matter except within a couple dozen kilometre radius. and even the smallest bomb yields just have to be hundreds or thousands of times worse than any nuclear plant meltdown. all that dirt getting blown up to sky etc.
how far from populated areas were the old U.S. detonations, anybody have an idea? I bet they could've almost hit the closest town with a rock back then.

I've been noticing the same thing, the panic seems to be more a western thing. here too. people have been buying the stores empty from iodine to protect themselves from possible japanese fallout. somebody sold a bottle of pills on the web for 500 euros! 😀 crazy stuff... didn't matter that the radiation and nuclear safety authority centre people explained that it's completely unnecessary, people just went crazy right of the bat.
