I was reading an article in the paper yesterday regarding Niger's plite. Well the plite of it's people anyway. It's not as if there is a shortage of food there. It's just not distributed properly. There are markets full of food and starving families a couple of miles down the road because they have no money to buy anything. This has partly come about due to the open market. Farmers can get twice the price for their food if they sell it to the US or countries of the EU. Another case of western meddling causing problems in the third world.
Originally posted by elohiym chananI never said the farmers shouldn't make as much profit as possible, did I?
If you were the farmer would you not sell for the most profit you could get? They are in dire straits as well. The problem is much more complex than you paint it. The local governments failures are much more to blame than any outside "meddling"
The sad thing about this is that if they'd raised funds for the growing problem at the time of Live8, the amount of money required to provide the necessary aid would have been half as much (reported on BBC Radio 5's Drive show).
So, whilst Live8 was about not raising money, it has kinda backfired really as it didn't have the massive lasting impact in terms of raised awareness that was hoped for, and would have left a much stronger legacy if it had been run as a fundraiser also.
Another potential problem for Niger is charity apathy - as some people will still feel that they have done their bit for this year by contributing to the Tsunami relief effort.
It seems also (though I may be wrong) that this seems to be a UK focused DEC intitiative, so wonder if it is being raised in other countries?
I for one will be contributing, I just hope enough can be raised to provide the necessary aid. It is ridiculous that these famines still persist in todays world.

I was just trying to point out that greedy western policies are causing a lot of suffering throughout the world. And point taken that some of this is also be attibutable to the governments of these striken countries. Greed and corruption is rife there too.
True. When I read your post I felt you were implying fault to them. Forgive me if I misinterpreted...

It's on Sept 25th. Although I cannot run right now, I am swimming to stay fit and will get around the course (it won't be a time to rival the winner though as I will be not race fit, and will be wearing a Gorilla suit - see profile/rhp faces).
I think justgiving will send you an email when I've done it (or debit your account then or something). I'll get a photo (or at least a copy of the results with my name on it) for you sometime after then to prove I did it... Edit: I'm listed as a confirmed entrant at this url http://www.ladygodiva-halfmarathon.co.uk/entry/atoz/index.asp 6th one down, # 354.
