Did anyone catch the Scorsese film on Bob Dylan these last two days on BBC2?
Wasn't that fcuking terrific!!
To come out on stage; every show for an entire tour; to be boo'd at each show...
And to just carry on!
That, my friends, is balls.
To constantly renew yourself with a total disregard for everyone else's opinion? Hell yeah! An inspiration for all!
Obviously the man has written some of the greatest songs ever written and he's definately the best lyric writer there ever was. But now I see he's entered the Balls book along with Frodo, Leia and every other fictional character you can imagine.
But this man is real.
All hail Bob Dylan!

Bob's always been an enigma, but I get the feeling he has begun the process of selling out

He obviously didn't sell out. He was boo'd on stage for the whole of his '66 tour.
To carry one...man....

He was booed by people who had already bought tickets.
Bob cried all the way to the bank.
However...
Have you ever been booed on stage?
Have you ever had anyone tell you you're crap?
Even if they've bought your bloody soul, it doesn't matter. It's like getting stabbed. To put up with it for a complete tour...that's balls.
Say your girlfriend of 5 years pays for your trip to Australia, but uses the occasion to dump you because your penis is too short (according to her).
Will you be laughing all the way to the holiday bank?

My money would comfort me and besides, he's no babe in the woods.

Especially if 'what is best' in your eyes is 'changing'.
So, you build up a repertoire, play it, become famous...then change your repertoire!
It was a much safer bet to keep doing what he was doing. But he didn't. He did what he thought was best. and continued it, even though most critics and fans were telling him he shouldn't.
That is style.
Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you're gonna have to get used to it
You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And ask him do you want to make a deal?
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
But you'd better lift your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
Song For Bob Dylan
(David Bowie)
Now hear this Robert Zimmerman
I wrote a song for you
About a strange young man called Dylan
With a voice like sand and glue
His words of truthful vengeance
They could pin us to the floor
Brought a few more people on
And put the fear in a whole lot more
Ah, here she comes
Here she comes
Here she comes again
The same old painted lady
From the brow of the superbrain
She'll scratch this world to pieces
As she comes on like a friend
Couple of songs
From your old scrapbook
Could send her home again
Gave your heart to every bedsit room
At least a picture on the wall
And you sat behind a million pair of eyes
And told them how they saw
Then she lost your train of thought
The paintings are all your own
While troubles are rising
We'd rather be scared
Together than alone
Ah, here she comes
Here she comes
Here she comes again
Same old painted lady
From the brow of the superbrain
She'll scratch this world to pieces
As she comes on like a friend
But a couple of songs
From your old scrapbook
Could send her home again - ahh
Now hear this Robert Zimmerman
Though I don't suppose we'll meet
Ask your good friend Dylan
If he, he's wild down the old street
Tell him we've lost his poems
So we're writing on the walls
Give us back our unity, an'
Give us back our family
You're every nation's refugee
Don't leave us with their sanity
Ah, here she comes
Here she comes
Here she comes again
The same old painted lady
From the brow of the superbrain
She'll scratch this world to pieces
As she comes on like a friend
But a couple of songs
From your old scrapbook
Could send her home again
Oh a couple of songs
From your old scrapbook
Could send her home again
Oh, here she comes, ooh here she comes
Yeah, here she comes

I'd just smile and nod as they raved on, knowing full well they would end up buying his next album anyways.

boo-ins. It was great. He wore this slinky green outfit and said
"This song used to go like THAT, now it goes like THIS"
and went into an electric 'Maggie's Farm' It was great! I was actually
embarassed by the audiences boo's.
