I've recently taken an interest in non-english language movies due to being completely sick of 99% of the formulaic, money spinning, all hype crap coming out of Hollywood these days.
The stories/plots of the non-english movies that I have seen are excellent and very refreshing, the acting moving, the scripts extremely well written, with very natural dialogue as compared to the majority of the 'where can we get a cheap laugh in here' writing of Hollywood script writers and the content matter has been extremely believable.
Now the non-english language movies that I have seen and loved are Amelie - an brilliantly quirky French feel good movie
Cidade de Deus - an excellent movie about life in the favelas (slums) of Brazil
Carandiru - a fantastic Brazillian movie about life inside a prison in Sao Paulo
Diarios de motocicleta - An adaptation of Ernesto 'Che' Guevarra's diary as he went on a motorcycle trip around South America as a youngster.
I've seen another couple of fantastic non-english language movies including another Brazillian, which I don't know the name of, and a short scottish movie (definitely counts π ), which is an extra on 'The Magdalene Sisters' DVD over here.
Can anybody recommend other non-english language movies that are worth paying money for, as the video shops in my town only get the typical big budget, big hype, big crap Hollywood fair.

If you like this sort of film, any of the older Cantonese or Hong Kong kung film films in there original format are great!
Personal favourite is Legend of Fong Sai Yuk (1 and 2). Have to read the subtitles though!!
Other than that - what about "The Passion of the Christ". Personally I avoided it, but I was told it was all in Aramaic.
Here are some French and Danish recommendations:
The Trois Couleurs Trilogy (Rouge, Bleu et Blanc) trilogy directed by Krzystof Kieslowski (sp?)
"Festen (Celebration)" - This is the first Dogme movie.
"Harry, un ami qui vous veut bien (With a friend like Harry)" - French dark comedy.
"Idioterne (The Idiots)" - part of Lars Von Trier's "Golden Heart" trilogy. The only one not done in English.
Originally posted by RagnorakYou should check out anything written & directed by Emir Kusturica (Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina); I would suggest you start with titles such as: Black Cat, White Cat (Subtitled 1998); Underground (Subtitled 1995) & I hear his latest: Life Is a Miracle, is pretty good (a bit predictable, but nonetheless worthwhile).

I looked up a few of the movies recommended by everybody on IMDB, and they look like good recs. Now just to find them cheap.
BTW: Cidade de Deus = City of God in portuguese, and I agree with everyone, superb movie. It seems to capture the essence of Brazil and Brazillians excellently, from my experience.

Originally posted by RagnorakOff the top of my head is City of God which is in Portuguese, its a darn good movie. There is also Leon, known in its english version as The Professional, find the original, both are good but Leon is better. If you like good horror you can see two movies that the US ripped off, Ringu, which is much better and scarier than The Ring and Ju-on, which is now The Grudge, though in this case its the same director so the US version wasn't too much worse than the original. Baise Moi, a crazy french movie kind of like thelma and louise but crazier with better looking lead characters. And also Romance another french movie that my friend liked I wasnt that into it.
