Get your money back. NIS isn't very good anyway.

Use a "safe" browser (anything other than IE), install a fast firewall (eg. Sygate) and that's all you'll really need. There are far better anti-virus programs available too.

Alternatively, grab a free, "cracked" copy of NIS using a "peer-to-peer" client.
if it's cracked how do you know it's not hacked?

So far, I haven't consulted a single website for any chess position I've posted. Although I don't see how my sources matter.

My advice is to DUMP all Norton Anti-virus and Norton Internet Security programs! Yeah, your computer will boot 10 times faster and run a hell of a lot quicker. It won't crash every other week either once you dump the Symantic products.
1 Non-Subscriber Recommendation

The problem, though, is in removing entirely ALL traces of this stuff from one's system...

I used the term loosely. Many programs are shared with "key generator" files. Basically, these allow you to enter a serial, or licence, number...

Best advise.

But you know what Windows users are like...

Buy one of the better anti-virus programs out there like McAfee. These people know what they're doing and will help you if you have a problem. The Symantic people won't even bother to answer your email.
So much advice! Thanks...

I tried copy and paste of the number they sent me.

My PC is not slow with Norton installed, boot time is fine. It doesn't crash often either.

Symantec have replied to my email asking I send them my account ID (with handy instructions for how to find) so maybe, just maybe, they'll come good and help me get it sorted.

I have considered Linux but I don't have a couple of months spare to get it all up and running (that's what I would need).

Did you try the website I gave you previously?
It gives you complete and simple instructions for that exact problem.

No. I'm at work so my earlier reply and this one are not at the affected machine. I should've written that I will look though, maybe tonight if not tomorrow.

Cheers

I'm surprized they actually answered an email from anybody! 😠

I asked for help after a simple program HACKED the Norton Internet Security program and they just ignored me.

Norton's Internet Security and Anti Virus programs are the WORST programs on the market! Yeah, a simple email, allowed by NIS, can hack their so-called "security".

Can you substantiate this?

I'm thinking along the same lines as your recent accusations of RHP spyware.

Bad News: Symantec bought Sygate. (I only just found out.)

Probably time to look for another firewall...
