Is there any unwritten rule of courtesy, saying that if you know your opponent has a won position, and you know you are beat that you should resign. At what point does one know. At what point is it safe to say ok this game is lost let me resign so i can save my better opponent some trouble. Is there a rule of coutresy that we can establish here on this site so that losing players can follow...

arrrgh
My answer is indeed the right answer. Everyone chooses when that point is for them on a game by game basis. Judging someone else on their point of resignation is stupid. Don't do it.
That goes for all of you.

If someone wants to drag it out until you checkmate him, that's just the way she goes. Part of the game.
I had one opponent tell me he wasn't going to resign because he was going to allow me the pleasure of checkmating him, since he thought I played well.
No problem there is there?
