New Zealand was first discovered circa 1300 by Polynesians.

The first European to discover NZ was Abel Tasman in 1643.

Cooke is credited with mapping the coast.
I stand corrected and shall removed the erroneous post from this venerable thread immediately.

A pivotal moment in English history!
Battle is the closest place to Senlac Ridge ... has some decent restaurants.

Battle Abbey is well worth a visit and there is a
very good audio tour and walk around the battlefield.

I used to work in the area frequently but never toured it for pleasure; I really should take a few days to go back for a look around.

    Seriously?

The Normans along with their allies (French, Bretons, Dutch(?)) won, thus
establishing an English nobility ethnically different to the people they ruled.

    On this day in 1834...

The original Houses of Parliament were almost completely destroyed by fire.

The blaze, which started from overheated chimney flues, spread rapidly throughout the medieval complex and developed into the biggest conflagration to occur in London since the Great Fire of 1666.
