Actually the ships did arrive but the French moved their ships between them the shore . Not wanting to declare war on the French the English ships did not attempt to land .

“England expects...” was the signal raised from HMS Victory shortly before kick off. The victory gave Britain naval supremacy until the 1900s.
HMS Victory is restored and preserved in dry dock at Portsmouth and is well worth a visit.
