I don't often watch telly, but I had it on last night while I was fixing dinner and heard a rather interesting advert which got me thinking.
I'd like to pose the same question here:

If you had to choose only one book to read to your child, what would you choose?
Would you choose something philosophical, historical, scientific, fictional or satirical?
How would you justify your choice?

Personally I'd choose one of Da Vinci's Notebooks, not only does it retain an element of fantasy, it would make them think and challenge ideas, explore and grow.
However it seems to be a double edged sword, how can you decide on one opinion and one only to shape that child for the rest of their life?
Anyway, just curious as to what some of you would choose. So let's hear it.

The title of this topic reminds me of the lord of the rings.

One book to rule them all
One book to find them
One book to bring them all
and in the darkness, bind them

I'd consider getting off the glue if I were you.

Depends on the child's age and interests...As a general answer for a young child, I'd go with a compendious volume of world folk-tales, assuming the adult has the requisite skills.

I think I'd choose something with the least indoctrination as possible. Lord of the Rings, probably.

When children have read just a few books they tend to take it as true and not be very skeptic. They haven't found contradiction yet.

(An idiosyncratic interpretation of a compendium of Nordic folk tales).
