Have your company be bought by one that strictly monitors internet usage. Cold turkey was a hard way to go...🙄

I tend to believe that personal internet use should NOT be done on company time since that constitutes theft of the companies resources (and time).

True. But, if done on breaks and lunch, it should not be a problem. Alas, it is now...

If done on breaks it is still theft of the companies resources it is not time 🙂 Mr. Belgian sir, if it is a method of stress refief (apparently not my games against qweejy) and the company speciffically allows it, then i see no problem.

I'm only continuing this for the fun of it. Of course you're (mostly) right but... if the company had a big fire going 24/7, whould you be 'stealing' if you cooked your dinner on it. Sure you'd be taking some of the heat from that fire, but it's such a big fire that it's neglegable, and the fire'd just be burning anyway. Couldn't company PC's & network access be viewed in the same way?

and no, my company doesn't allow personal use at all. Officially. Unofficially a little it tolerated. I don't know what they'd say about my net usage if they checked though...

Well I had an email from your boss asking for a log of all site activity attributed to a user called 'belgianfreak'. Of course, I refused. I couldn't get the log file on to one disk.... 😛

Me and Tosser must be the lucky ones then! The company we work for has given everyone with a desktop pc, internet access through the network with the only restriction being no downloading from fileshare sites such as Kazaa and Supanova, purely due to it clogging the network. We do enough of that up/downloading drawing files all day!!! 😵

And I would like to see your employers acceptable use policy. I would guess there is a clause in there that states your employment can be terminated for improper use of their internet connection. Only problem is that clauses like that give an employer carte blance to determine what is an improper use but improper use is NOT defined prior to any problem. For example, if an employer sees through his logs that someone was on any website dealing with a topic that the employer does not agree with, that website (and all similar sites) can be deemed improper by the employer and the employee hasn't a leg to stand on. It is best (and safer) to use the internet at home on your own connection. If you don't have an internet connection at home, go to an internet cafe or public library. If neither choice is available, feel free to be unethical and use your employer's resources but don't complain if you end up jobless.

Not that its any of your business, but our company dosnt haved a set or written policy on IT/Internet use and in fact the MD regularly asks employee's to look up non work related subjects for him. The office staff and bosses have a very relaxed working relationship! 😵

That is your companys mistake. The hospital where i work does not (or shall I say did not) have any policy in place until employees started abusing the hospitals internet connection.

Actually our company has installed a very relaxed operating policy, where all staff including the owners are one first name terms, which for 10 years has seen an upturn in productivity and a staff turnover of virtually zero, due to the fact most members of staff have a happy working environment. Before you ask, the company employs over 500 people around the country, and has increased turnover from 10 to 60 million in 5 years, so their policies and working practices obviou
sly work!....
