How needlessly complex! To supply a commentary about X is nothing more than to comment on X. 'Commenter' is correct, anybody who uses 'commentator' is a philistine, and an enemy of clear expression.
example: if i say 'this is a really tight game', i have commented on it, but i have not supplied a commentary. but if i were to keep up a stream of cliches, aphorisms, facts, statistics and epithets related to the game in progress, then i have supplied a commentary. the 'in progress' may be important too, as commentary is normally associated with this, whereas i can comment on a game that was played last week or last year.
