Latest: you're safe if you are 7 km from the peak.

The ash and steam seem to have come out of the flank of the volcano.

Absolutely, yes.

[The land on the slopes has very fertile soil.]

They may have had warnings and so were able to scarper.

Yes. There are [were] jeep rides around the area that was devastated by the really big 2006 eruption. Some local people I know very politely let me know of their disapproval.

The resort is called Kaliurang and it's pretty busy on the weekends. It's really close to the peak. There'll be nobody there today.

There was another big one in 2010.

It's ALWAYS "active" and I've heard it said it's "the most active volcano in the world" but I am not sure what the criteria for that accolade are.

We were fortunate to miss that, we may have had trouble flying home. I wonder what conditions are like at the Hyatt....

Yes. Prancing about on people's graves, although not literally.

Growing up in Montreal there was a persistent rumour that Beaver Lake/Lac aux Castors was in fact the opening of an ancient volcano. Well “Breaking News”…it wasn’t. Had I known then, what I know “now”, I wouldn’t have had so many sleepless nights worrying about it “blowing”.🤔😲😉👍

The Hyatt will be OK. It's about 20 km from the volcano. I'm 30 km away.

Here? Last thing I heard, you were in Kalimantan!

Be honest, now: you're posting from Slough, in Geester's spare room, aren't you?

I've never been to Kalimantan.

The last time I was in Slough was probably circa 1979.
