Are there any patriotic songs you like from any country, in any language? I can't get this one out of my head (the Leonard Cohen version that is):
UN CANADIEN ERRANT
Un Canadien errant,
Banni de ses foyers, 😞
|: Parcourait en pleurant
Des pays étrangers. 😞
|: Un jour, triste et pensif,
Assis au bord des flots, 😞
|: Au courant fugitif
Il adressa ces mots: 😞
|: "Si tu vois mon pays,
Mon pays malheureux, 😞
|: Va, dis à mes amis
Que je me souviens d'eux. 😞
|: "O jours si pleins d'appas
Vous êtes disparus, 😞
|: Et ma patrie, hélas!
Je ne la verrai plus! 😞
|: "Non, mais en expirant,
O mon cher Canada! 😞
|: Mon regard languissant
Vers toi se portera
(Understandably, Cohen cuts the last verse. I can't bring myself to post the lamentable translation, you can find it here: http://ingeb.org/songs/uncanadi.html)
EDIT: It is a sad song so the un-smileys are totally appropriate.

[EDIT: Musically more than lyrically.]
I admit that I have a tendency to sing this one when I'm well and truly in my cups.
ADMIRAL BENBOW
Come all ye seamen bold, and draw near
And draw near
Come all ye seamen bold, and draw near
It is of an admiral's fame
O brave Benbow was his name
How he fought all on the main
You shall hear, you shall hear.
2. Brave Benbow he set sail, for to fight
For to fight
Brave Benbow he set sail, for to fight.
Brave Benbow he set sail,
With a fine and pleasant gale
But his captains they turn'd tail
In a fright, in a fright.
3. Says Kirby unto Wade, "We will run,
We will run."
Says Kirby unto Wade, "We will run.
For I value no disgrace
Or the losing of my place
But the enemy I won't face
Nor his guns, nor his guns."
4. Then Ruby and Benbow fought the French
Fought the French,
Then Ruby and Benbow fought the French.
They fought them up and down
'Til the blood came trickling down
'Til the blood came trickling down
Where they lay, where they lay.
5. Brave Benbow lost his legs by chain shot
By chain shot,
Brave Benbow lost his legs by chain shot.
Brave Benbow lost his legs
And all on his stumps he begs
Fight on, my English lads
'Tis our lot, 'tis our lot.
6. The surgeon dress'd his wounds, cries Benbow
Cries Benbow,
The surgeon dress'd his wounds, cries Benbow.
"Let a cradle now in haste
On the quarterdeck be placed,
That the enemy I may face
'Til I die, 'til I die.
7. 'Twas on Tuesday morning last, Benbow died,
Benbow died
'Twas on Tuesday morning last Benbow died
Oh what a shocking sight to see brave Benbow carried away
He was buried in Kingston Church
There he lay, there he lay

valientes y osados
cantemos soldados
el himno a la lid.
De nuestros acentos
el orbe se admire
y en nosotros mire
los hijos del Cid.
Soldados la patria
nos llama a la lid,
juremos por ella
vencer o morir.
El mundo vio nunca
más noble osadia,
ni vió nunca un día
más grande el valor,
que aquel que, inflamados,
nos vimos del fuego
excitar a Riego
de Patria el amor.
Soldados la patria
nos llama a la lid,
juremos por ella
vencer o morir.
La trompa guerrera
sus ecos da al viento,
horror al sediento,
ya ruge el cañon
a Marte, sañudo,
la audacia provoca
y el ingenio invoca
de nuestra nación.
Soldados la patria
nos llama a la lid,
juremos por ella
vencer o morir.

But you said: "The Hymn of Riego is beautiful - both the lyrics and the music." So I assumed that you considered the lyrics important. And I didn't like the music, so I hoped the lyrics would be better.
Just listen. Trust me, music without lyrics is still audible.
Originally posted by NordlysI do - but the lyrics are perfectly self-contained, and the melody is inspiring both with and without them. Personally, I find it very elevating either way, but if you want to hear a more complete version, try
