Just in case anyone were thinking of forgetting the recent debacle, here's a new topic.

Recently in criticism of the English team, I have been accused of anglophobia, because I myself am a Paddy. Similarly, the Jocks and Taffs here were accused of the crime against the old Saxon foe. The theory being that we Celts have an irrational bias against the Albion and all within, including her very poor football team.

Now, thanks to a collection in the Irish Times I got the idea maybe we could discuss the general media reception to the English World Cup effort outside the British Isles.

I might start. Headline which I recall from the Gazzetta dello Sport after the England - Paraguay game, while the English raved about their stupendous victory, the Italians wrote: 'L'inghilterra va, Macché Noia!' ('England get the win, but oh the utter tedium!'.

Now, from El Pais, the Spanish daily:

'Eriksson decided to make Crouch, a two-metre asparagus, the constant reference point. Their football is flat, grotesque and contaminating.'.

Many more to follow. ๐Ÿ˜€ All contributions welcome.

If you were guilty of anglophobia, you are also guilty of racism against the Jutes and the Danes who founded the land of the Engs.

Haven't you got anything better to do then start yet another racist arguement? ๐Ÿ˜ด

Personally I find football almost as poor an action as racism.

Wait now- racism... again?

You poor fellow. Can't you see that it has nothing to do with hatred for your race, but criticism of your poor soccer team? So, I'm Irish, and I apparently hate the English race, and presumably the same for my Scottish and Welsh friends here? Ok, so we've established the Italians and the Spanish are 'racist' against the Angles. Oh dear. Who else?

What about Brazil? There's a country where many races have lived together in peace for many years. Are they 'racist' too? Let's see, shall we?

From Gazeta Esportiva:

'England, the home of football, should be grateful that the WAGS (wives and girlfriends), anorexics addicted to shopping with hollow, lobotomised heads, are in Germany, there to detract from their team's poor footballing skills'.

I left out the next paragraph on your poor genetic make-up, but you get the picture. So the Brazlians are racist too. For shame.

And then, don't mention the Argies- as you so helpfully put it. I mean 'bleedin' cheatin' Argie ref, had it in for us 'e did!'.

Again, I ask the question, in you insular, small-minded world, who exactly doesn't hate you? Or are we (collective Johnny Foreigner) all against you poor, persecuted fellows?

After what the English done to the Irish, the Welsh and the Scots, it's no small wonder that petty hatreds raise their ugly heads during sporting occasions. I think it's pretty lenient that it's really only during sport that it does become apparant.

I mean, as short a time ago as the 80's Thatcher (who had very, very little support in Scotland) was trying to introduce the poll tax on the Scots. Only a small legal loophole brought that financial bombshell to a halt.

As short a period ago as 10 years (!), the English were fully supporting protestant terrorism against Catholics in Northern Ireland. That's really gonna make friends, innit?

Never mind the whole bloody history of the UK: denying languages, crushing clothing and obliterating cultures.

And I think it's good on the Scots, Welsh and Irish that they don't blame individual English people for such woes. Because let's be honest, it was obviously the rich and the powerful who did such attrocities, the poor being once again duped by religion and false sentiments such as national pride.

So the next time "England" is hated during football, see it rather not as something negative, but as a safety valve to keep minds on track who the enemy is. Not the English, but England as an institution!

Hasta la victoria Siempre!

Clarification: The support of football, not the game in itself, has become tantamount to patriotism (in league football, this is obviously a smaller tribal version rather than a national one), a notion which I personally find revolting.

Funny, though- in 1995/6 I seem to recall, the English had a 'friendly' against us here in Dublin.

Their skinhead fans came ove, and spouted a load of nonsense about being there to support 'the Protestant Cause', and all that nonsense, 'up the UVF!', insults to the Pope, and all that kind of carry-on.

Sad, really. Made complete fools of themselves. And they weren't too aristocratic, Shav, you're right, but just stupid enough to have been conned by pseudo-ideology.

Anyhow, we went a goal up and were all over them, and these skin-headed thugs, already organised, had this as a signal to tear up the place- They ripped the seats out and started throwing them at families and respectable people in the Stands.

So, the best thing the police ever did here, they cancelled the game, and our fans left the stadium. They then went in, and beat the living crud out of those unfortunate moronic thugs, stuck them on the next ferry home. It was beautiful to see. Much more satisfying than the football, anyway.

Won no friends over this way, though. And a similar photo showed a father taking his young son away across the pitch, the kid with tears in his eyes, incomprehension. Just like the shot of the German father with his young daughter on his shoulders, fleeing these yobs, you might have seen recently, as the bottles reigned down. Not many friends made there either. Never changes.

Ah that's a load of w@nk. Nationalism is very last century, true, but this is better than going to war with one another. if we had no EU and no sport, then a brutal world it would be here on the Old Continent.

You are entitled to your opinion, but in mine, the one you've just presented is a load of w@nk.

I'm calling you racist, you moron.

Funnily enough, and contrary to what your ego may have you believe you aren't the rest of the world. So, if you can get down from your narcissistic high-horse for a second, remove your head from it's deep insertion up your own arse and stop the verbal diarrhoea of your deluded opinions on international politics....

Me calling you racist has nothing to do with your nationality (which incidently you keeps bringing up seemingly as some excuse for or some vain attempt to glorify and defend your views), it's to do with what you say, the way you say it and your zealous infatuation with hating the English.

So, in your insular, small-minded world, if it's not your racist attitude that drives you to persistantly make countless threads and posts about how much you hate and despise the English, than what else is it?
