Tragically killed in an accident, Philip was Chairperson of the Irish Chess Union.

I didn't know the man but by all accounts a great guy and a tireless promoter of chess in Ireland.

Condolences to family & friends.

I heard about it today. Apparently, he jumped over bollard/deviders that were sectioning off roadworks at Jobstown - Tallaght, and jumped into the path of a Garda car coming round the corner....quite tragic.

I think he wrote that "Longer Than" song, back in the '70s.

I'm not sure about chairperson of the ICU, but he was definitely one of Ireland's shining lights in the chess world (any light over here is a big help).......He died, age 19.

Hi All,
I was a good friend with Phil and trust when I say that he was a great, great guy. He really and truly wanted the best for Irish chess and it looked like the Irish chess scene would boom undder his influence.
He was chairperson of the ICU from 2006 until his death on Jan 1st 08. He will be sadly missed.

A tribute I had written is on the Limerick Chess club website, www.limerickchessclub.net if your interested.
It is a sad loss and the world will be a worse place without Philip Hogarty
