I think you have to do all of your adjustments to it. a.k.a. lighting/contrast, color cordination, and crap like that, then before you sharpen the photo, you change the settings in the file; save as; from the before file to JPG.

Make sure you are viewing your layers by placing a tick next to layers in your "Window" menu
Now look for the tiny arrow on the layers tab - you can flaten your image from there.
