Know when to be aggressive and when to be conservative. My friends are sick of me bragging about it but I won a Limit Hold Em tourney at a Hard Rock casino about six months ago using that very strategy. For the first few hours I played very conservative and was able to hang in around the average chip count, then the blinds started going up and I noticed that everyone started being very picky about their hands, since it cost so much to play. This is where I started being aggressive, making big bets and winning a lot of pots with rag cards. Later on in the tourney, when we were down to about 18 players, I was 3rd in chips and started playing conservative again, and eventually I was in a pot with a guy who had seen me make big bets and plays all day long, so when I bet he figured it was just me bluffing again and would call me the whole way with a very marginal hand. Eventually he (along with most of the other players) noticed I was only playing good cards again, and once I figured it was obvious, I switched back to aggressive and stayed that way the rest of the tourney. I got some good cards at the right times and ended up winning the tourney and a very nice payday for a 18 year old. 😉

My dad playes that a lot High/low split.
Same as Texas Hold 'Em except you are dealt 4 cards in your hand but you can only use 2. If there are three cards on the board that are 9 or lower (including the ace), the low hand splits the pot with the winner. An ace in your hand can also be low, so your high card combination and your low card combination can be two different hands and the entire pot can be won by one player.
I'm not sure if Hi/Lo Texas Hold 'Em is played that often, but I guess it can be.

Anyone familiar with Texas Hold Em Poker? I know the rules but it would nice if someone would reveal to me some tactics to help me along the way.......

Find a loose game and play tight. I'll give you a few tips tommorow when my girlfriend isn't calling me to bed but choosing the table correctly and then playing the long game is the ONLY way to win consistently apart from continually finding new chumps who want to learn to play!
Hi there,
Depending on the level of the other players. l agree totally with the body language points mentioned. Also get in their head in other ways.
When you win a hand (when they fold) dont show cards, and other times show a weak card. l have seen the pros do this and it drives the others insane, as they think they lost to a bluff when in fact they got beat fair and square. You can trap them soon after and collect.
Recent example was Annie Duke in the Champions touney - she took him apart upstairs using the above comments (and won a cool $2 mill)
Cheers,
Martin

Something to do with the number of cards I cant see after the first round is dealt? Therefore all probabilities are based on this number......
Am I on the right track sir?

Any tips on betting tactics?
Originally posted by timebombtedI'll give you one. Try this experiment for one session. When faced with a bet, never call. Either raise or fold, always. I'm not claiming that that is any sort of optimal strategy, but it is a good one for eliminating a large set of mistakes that beginnners make. This strategy will save you a lot of bets when you don't have the best hand or a draw to the best hand. It will win you a lot more bets when you do have the best hand. As you learn more about the game, you'll appreciate some of the more subtle benefits of this strategy, such as controlling the table, getting free cards, protecting your hand, and reducing the information you give away that other players can exploit. But for now, as a beginner, if you never call ( or God forbid overcall), but only raise or fold you'll come a lot closer to optimal play than if you mix calls in, since calls are very rarely correct anyway.

May my opponents place their fate in lady luck, whilst I place mine in probability.
