Australia's gun laws were written after Port Arthur in 1996 and they're just fine. ASIO needs to explain why they identified an ISIS follower and a registered gun owner in the same family and didn't see the security risk.
Some of us really thought that something might change here after Sandy Hook, but apparently Congress was fine with nearly 20 6-year-olds getting murdered.

They weren't handguns, they were long-barrelled rifles. They were registered as game-shooting guns in the father's name. The son was a known IS supporter and our 1996 gun laws didn't include checks on familial connections. In 1996 multiple shooters were psychopathic individuals. Now our authorities are planning to extend the laws to account for fanatic groups, because even in peaceful Australia they exist now.
Here we did manage to ban automatic weapons, but still, that only lasted until a new president was elected.
And a few fanatics shouldn't cause all citizens to lose their rights, but perhaps stiffer penalties might help with a deterrent effect, and of course stricter background checks should help as well as keeping guns out of the hands of sociopaths.
I hope American lawmakers watch what Australia does, because I think Australians have a better handle on how to responsibly handle this.
I don't think the US can ever have real gun control, your society was built by dissidents with a strong resistance to government control, and went to war to get rid of it. Our society was built by convicts and we didn't fight off our controllers, we learned to live within a framework of rules. In today's world we still feel an unjustified sense of security.
