Whenever people ask me ‘What do I want?’, I always reply ‘Oh, nothing.’. And I am quite serious, because when people do buy me things, they always end up on the shelf/in a box, along with all the other gadgets I never wanted.

So, lets compile a list of relatively inexpensive gifts that every man (or woman) should own. I suspect I will get a good list out of this thread, but no one will offer to buy them, but anyway, here we go….

So, suggestion number #1. (This is a bit nerdy, but most of you will be PC owners, so you will probably have a need for this, even if you don’t know it yet.)

Allow me to present the ‘Icy Box.’

What the hell is that, you may ask?

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=112590

Basically, everyone needs to back up their PC, right? You used to be able to stick your docs on a floppy, CD, or maybe even a DVD, and that was fine, but now you have digital photos and endless PGNs to back up, and all that disk swapping is a right hassle.

Well, get one of these guys, grab an old IDE hard drive left over from an old upgrade (OK, maybe this does rule most people out, but some of you will still be with me, right?), stick it into the Icy Box, plug it, and instant portable cheap storage.

I was always a little slack at backing up my own machines before I got one of these – but now, I can take all my data with me wherever I go.

Why am I making such a big deal out of this? Well, two days ago I deleted most of my recent clan leagues code. I had that heart sinking ‘data loss trauma’ for about 30 seconds before finding my backups were in order.

Anyway, if this of interest to you, I recommend www.handybackup.com too – a simple to use, but very effective back up application. (for Windows.)

Right, the next suggesting better be a whole lot more interesting than that one….fire away!

Due to a screw-up (too long to get into) I have 2 hard drives on this machine. I just use MS Backup to save my data to the other drive. It saved my bacon once. (After another foul-up I had to reformat C drive)
I always ask for peace on Earth for Christmas, but I'd settle for a wee bottle of Scotch. (Or Drambuie!!)

A 2nd drive is obviously very sensible, but if someone runs off with your machine, you are in trouble.

Surely a years sub to RedHotPawn should be top of any computer nerd´s Christmas list?

A nice little box of all the basic tools - including fairly obscure but extremely handy ones - that every person should have. Or, a kit for the car or the bicycle. Many people don't have these things. I don't have a car kit for example. It would have a blanket that doesn't take too much space, a sign that you can write stuff on to flag down cars or cops, maybe some basic tools, a little food and cash, flashlight, maybe a flashing light thing to draw attention, jumper cables...I don't know...stuff like that.

An ipod should be on everyone's Christmas list.
Store thousands of songs on your nice compact ipod and listen to them anywhere.
It's what i'm asking for anyway!
